Syzygium is a genus from the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. There are about 1200-1800 species of Syzygium and its native range expands from Africa, through southern Asia to the Pacific.
One of the most well-known Syzygium species is the Syzygium aromaticum, or more commonly known as the clove. This spice is used in cooking all around the world, as well as used in traditional and western medicine due to a wide range of reported therapeutic effects. This species is one of the earliest known spices in trade and is native to the Maluku islands, however now, due to its economic importance, it is currently cultivated in numerous locations throughout the tropics. It is also a candidate for some crop improvement programmes which aim to breed and select plants which are of high economic importance with the aim to improve their diversity and increase their resistance.
Kew Garden’s Herbarium is one of the largest collections of historical plant specimens from all over the world and currently our job is to digitise all these specimens to make them available online. By transcribing these Syzygium sheets, you will not only be contributing to this gigantic task of digitising all our specimen data, but also help scientists understanding of this genus’s ecology and biology, indicating how we can utilize and preserve these plants.
